Migration and social change: a long-term global perspective
Leo Lucassen is Professor of Global Labour and Migration History (University of Leiden) as well as the director of the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam. His research focuses on Global Migration History, Integration, Migration Systems, Migration Controls, Gypsies and the state, State Formation and Modernity, as well as Urban History. His aim is to stimulate interdisciplinary research on migration history and contribute to the public debate on migration.
In the workshop, we will discuss in depth the historical perspectives of migration and we will have the opportunity to discuss ongoing research projects of PhD candidates. If your project fits into this theme, you are warmly invited to present your project. One of our PhD candidates, Sarah Khayati (Middle Eastern Studies) will present her work in progress on Swiss-based Arab political activists and students in the interwar period – their experience in Switzerland, and their encounters with Swiss society and its authorities. Switzerland served as an important place for Middle Eastern political activists with all kinds of ideological aspirations during the first half of the 20th century – mostly students and refugees, who were either exiled from their home countries by the mandate authorities or who fled as political refugees to escape persecution. Her study sheds light on the field of transnational migration history by analyzing the relationship between local society and Switzerland’s administrative bodies, and the global, such as transnational movements in exile.
There will be an opportunity to discuss ongoing research projects of PhD candidates. If your project (or aspects of your work) speak to the theme of the workshop, you are warmly invited to present your project. If you wish however, to participate in the workshop please send an email to Julia Büchele (j.buechele@unibas.ch). If you also wish to discuss your work during the workshop, please include a short description of your project no later than February 15.
